Understanding Diamonds in 4Cs

The four main criteria for determining the preciousness of a diamond are its color, clarity, cut and weight. By counseling its clientele judiciously, La Maison advises in the most skillful way to reach its desires and its budget.

Below, we detail how these 4 criteria work, the "4Cs", their scales and the art of combining them.

As a rule of thumb, the higher the criteria are on their respective scale, the more luminous and precious your diamond will be.

GIA
The Gemmological Institute of America

GIA

Since 1931, the Gemmological Institute of America (GIA) has worked to provide a common language for those involved in the diamond market, providing a clear method for determining their quality. This approach aims to protect buyers and sellers who can now rely on the famous 4Cs

The GIA evaluates every stone submitted and issues a certificate. A true diamond passport, this document accompanies every diamond over 0.50 carat offered by Lapis Luminis

Our Maison only deals with GIA certificates, which are the most renowned and recognized in the world. Even within the engagement ring configurator, each project will be accompanied by a GIA certificate attesting the characteristics of the main diamond

1. Color Grading

The color quality of the white diamonds that illuminate the High Jewelry pieces is graded on a scale from D to Z. The color "D" signifies that the diamond is colorless and represents the top of the scale. Inversely, the color "Z" represents a yellowish tint, undesirable, and denotes the lowest end of the scale

Lapis Luminis only selecting the most desirable gems, offers in its engagement ring configurator white diamonds of colors ranging from "D" to "H", thereby giving its clientele the assurance of a jewel of the highest quality

Moreover, diamonds can be found in every color of the rainbow, we keep them available to our clientele upon request

     2. Clarity Grading

For all white diamonds, it is necessary to assess their degree of purity. That is, the number, shape and size of impurities in the stone. This scale extends between the grade Flawless without any impurity whatsoever, and I3 (Included 3) which comprises inclusions visible to the naked eye.

Lapis Luminis selects diamonds between the Flawless and SI1 grades to offer in its configurator the assurance of a none to weakly included diamond.

The clarity grades the amount and size of inclusions in a diamond
This scale also applies to fancy color diamonds
The engagement ring configurator offers
purity grades from Flawless to SI1

We advise not to go below the SI1 grade
The clarity rating is listed on your GIA certificate

3. Cut - the shape

Brilliant round cut is the most well-known shape of the diamond

There are however several other cuts called Fancy Cuts . All are intended to magnify the passage of light, thus giving the gem its fire

Lapis Luminis offers the choice between 7 diamond cuts in its configurator. This is undoubtedly the principle criterion for creating a jewel that suits you

Although the most sought-after cut remains the brilliant round cut, we notice increasing interest for fancy cuts
